Its been a busy Summer here at SF Urban! The Clunie House has been undergoing extensive renovation and the work is 99% complete!The scaffolding is being taken off as I write this, and our 1898 Mansion is now entering its 'blue' phase. With accents of Dijon and Gold, the site of the SF Urban Program for Westmont College has taken on a bold, new look.
On the inside, extensive refurbishing, particularly on the 2nd floor has transformed many of the student rooms back to their Victorian glory.
In the image on the right, you can see the hallway of the 2nd floor where each room has received new plumbing fixtures, new, distinctive paint schemes, the claw foot tubs have been restored (see below) and upgraded, two rooms (204 and 304) had their former bathrooms torn out and new ones put in with all new tiled floors and walls. Every room in the house will receive new furniture and new window coverings.
In addition, flooring on the 1st floor has been redone, carpets cleaned, office construction planned to go along with the new kitchen construction which was completed in November, 2006. This unprecedented commitment and investment in the Clunie House exhibits Westmont's strong support for experiential education in San Francisco!

Everything should be ready for students to arrive and select their rooms on August 26th! There are 25 (of a maximum of 26) students coming to enjoy the new renovations and to experience a semester of experiential education in this world class city. Students will be selecting from an extensive variety of internships in their field of study, working 24 hours a week and gaining invaluable on-the-job training!Students learn to integrate their faith and their learning, particularly being informed as to how Christian faith in a city of diversity and need is more a matter of 'show than tell'. Issues of social justice, poverty, homelessness and other urban issues, allow each student to bring a heart-felt response to the message of Jesus as it was meant to impact a world of neediness. Many students return to the campus with a new perspective both in the areas of study they need to emphasize in their courses, but also how they might adjust their vocational goals to ensure they seek God's justice and 'shalom', in the midst of a culture often focused on consumerism and consumption.
We're thankful to God, and the supporters of Westmont College that this wonderful facility can exist for this purpose. As students feel at home in the City, and get in touch with the beauty of the past even as they prepare for their future, we know the Kingdom of God will be blessed by those who live and work in this community of faith.
These new facilities will also serve as a perfect environment for conferences and retreats in the Summer months. As Christians, professors and churchpersons in the Bay Area and beyond have a burden to pray for, minister in and visit this post-Christian city, the Clunie House will serve as a new base of operations.
